A 90-year-old woman, who is also a cancer patient, was sexually assaulted by a person who barged into her house in Kadakkal near Kollam in south Kerala. The incident took place on September 14 but came to light only on Wednesday.
The woman who is a widow does not have any children and has been living alone for 20 years since the death of her husband.
The state human rights commission has registered a case suo motu and asked the police to submit a report in a week. According to the police, the accused broke into the house through the rear door at night and assaulted the woman at knife point. She also suffered injuries in the scuffle.
Her relatives and neighbours reportedly asked her to keep quiet when she alerted them the next morning. The panchayat member of the area also showed similar apathy and ignored her complaint, the victim alleged.
A social worker of the area later alerted the police.
Doctors have confirmed the sexual assault. The victim has named a man from the area who is absconding. The police registered a case under IPC sections 377 and 354.
“We have recorded the victim’s statement and identified the accused. We will also book those who tried to hush up the case and denied her treatment,” said Kollam rural SP Ajitha Begum. The incident has sent shockwaves across the state. State police chief Loknath Behra has instructed southern range IG Manoj Abraham to constitute a special team to probe the incident.
In another shocker, a 15-year-old girl hailing from Thiruvananthapuram was kidnapped and gangraped by four people in Thodupuzha in Idukki district on Tuesday.
Police said they have arrested one person and are on the lookout for the others.
