Dipa Karmakar might be disappointed after narrowly missing out on an Olympic medal in gymnastics, but for anxious father Dulal, the joy of welcoming her home is greater than the regret.
Dulal, a Sports Authority of India weightlifting coach, was the first person Dipa called after missing out on bronze in the finals of the individual vault on Sunday.
“Dipa was disappointed and her voice was shaking. She kept telling me how close she was to an Olympic medal. She said, ‘Papa, I am feeling very sad, I have to wait for another four years (2020 Tokyo Olympics).’ I consoled her by saying she had already achieved so much. But her words left me disturbed,” Dulal told HT over the phone from Agartala on Tuesday.
The last two days have been tough on Dulal, especially after the call from his daughter in Rio.
“Dipa was sure of a medal. I am not sad about the miss, but for her. I told her, ‘come back, I have a big gift for you.’ Her birthday was on the 9th (August)”, told Dulal.
But he refused to reveal what the gift would be.
“I don’t want to make it public, but surely it is special. She is coming back on the 19th,” he said.
