India need to win this game against Pakistan if they are to stay alive. Here’s what all they should do...
Mohammad Amir’s strength is his ability to be accurate and fast from the word go. India openers have to see him off. The opening partnership hasn’t clicked for a while and that has put pressure on Kohli, which should be avoided in a high-stakes game.
Check their leader
Shahid Afridi, even though in the last stage of his career and lacking the sting of old, is capable of turning the game on its head with both bat and ball. He is particularly good on flat surfaces like that of Eden Gardens and may again push himself to No. 4. India need to attack him from the first ball.
Push Dhoni up
With middle-order jittery, especially against a quality attack, skipper MS Dhoni should come up the order. He did that successfully during the Asia Cup recently and against a threatening Pakistan attack, he should take the responsibility.
Ashwin the main man
Off-spinner R Ashwin has been used as a wicket-taker and has also been asked to restrict run-scoring in recent times. He has performed both the roles with aplomb. His success is key to India’s chances. Skipper Dhoni could even hand him the first over on Saturday.
