Chris Elliot is enamoured by trees. From growing up in New England to settling down in France, the American artist has taken his fascination to another level, by making them the focus of his creations.

His latest exhibit, Arboretum (generator of trees), consists of 16 paintings of trees that he painted on his last visit to India. “I spent a month in a village outside Pune,” says Elliot. “It was on the bank of a little reservoir and overlooked a valley. The place was quiet and serene after the monsoon. It reminded me of Ireland.”

The obsession
Elliot’s obsession led him to spend the duration of his stay alone. “I worked like a monk, with no TV, radio or newspapers. I’d wake up, paint for 12 hours or so, and then go back to sleep,” he says, explaining that it was necessary for him to concentrate and work with intensity.

The artist, who has been painting trees from his studio in France for over 15 years, is fascinated by their mystery and the patterns that they create. He has put together these paintings on canvas, using acrylic paints, pastels as well as crayons.

Arboretum by Chris Elliot is on display at Jamaat, Apollo Bunder, till November 18. Call 22820718 or visit www.jamaatart.com.
