Remember the iconic fighting pit scene from Game of Thrones, season 5 finale? The scene pushed together the key character of Dany’s storyline in one violent sequence. And as a result, the fans got what they crave most – excitement, thrill, a dash of anxiety and guaranteed entertainment.
Now, imagine if, instead of Missandei, Dany’s trusted aid and friend, the sequence entailed yet another warrior princess – Disney’s Pocahontas, the brave, noble and fearless princess who chose her people’s welfare over her own heart. Doesn’t this image evoke a fleeting memory of a childhood long-forgotten?
This is precisely what Greek artist Gregory Masoura does: Marry two polar opposite pop culture phenomenon into one. And his creations are not just limited to combining Disney characters with other popular fandoms. He also morphs the likes of Cinderella and Jasmine, with the likes of supermodel Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Think Cinderella wearing a Saint Laurent number, or the Disney princesses replacing high-profile models including Gigi Hadid and Ahshley Graham for a Vogue shoot.
His reason? To enable others to reminisce their once-favourite cartoon/animated characters with celebs in contemporary situations, and thus create a sense of nostalgia and highlight the loss of innocence. After all, we have come a long way - from growing up on fictional love stories, to being obsessed with the gory narrative of GoT, the media –frantic, money-making industry that is the Kardashian family, and the glossy, glitzy world of fashion.
