Summer has to be the favourite season for theatre lovers in Delhi, as the city is witnessing summer theatre festivals all around. One of the most popular festivals is the Asmita Summer Theatre Festival. This festival, organised by the Asmita Theatre group, will showcase 15 popular plays every weekend till July. The festival will feature some of its popular plays such as Ek Mamuli Aadmi, which underlines features of an urban middle class setting, Court Martial, Raaste, among others, all of which have been directed by Arvind Gaur, the head of the Asmita Theatre group.

“This year is special for us, as we are celebrating the 20th birthday of our summer festival,” says Gaur. The group, which often carries Delhi as the backdrop in its plays, is known to take up social issues to underline the social problems prevailing in the country. “We believe that if we are getting a platform, then we should not use it for only entertainment purposes, but also for underlining social issues. That’s why all our plays have a social message,” says Shilpi Marwaha, associate editor of Asmita Theatre Group.

The music for all the plays showcased in the festival will be given by Dr Sangeeta Gaur who is a vocalist, music director and composer. A unique feature of this festival is that the entry tickets are quite pocket-friendly. “We want our plays to reach people of all classes, that’s why our entry fee is low,” says Gaur.
