From the traditional forms of paintings, sketches and photographs to futuristic mixed media installations, digital art and more, Mumbai galleries are blooming with myriad artworks.Expanding the horizon further is Tarq’s (Colaba) upcoming show, Reading Room, which celebrates book art. The works are divided under two categories – artists’ books and alternate-book art.
While the former includes books that are conceptualised by the artist from scratch, the latter features sculptures crafted using books as raw materials. Talking about the development of book art in India, Ajay Kumar Jain,curator of the show, says, "Though artists’ books are often shown in exhibitions, the concept of a book as a medium of expression in visual arts was missing.

Compared to the west, we still have a long way to go. But, with such a rich tradition of paper-making, especially like the one in Sanganer (in Jaipur), this will soon evolve further."

In collaboration with the Delhi-based gallery, Blueprint12, and the Sri Lankan art organisation, Colombo Art Biennale, the show brings together works by 15 artists from across the world. Talking about the variety of works, Jain says, "Though the art pieces are open to interpretation, the collection is extensive. In the previous edition held in Delhi last year, people liked Banoo Batliboi, Anne Covell and Samanta Batra Mehta’s works.
There will be creative experiments with book folding, and the works will also investigate themes like history, colonisation, gender constructs and socio-political order."
