Ever thought of a dance composition based on the Delhi Metro? Well, this festival stages one, called Metro! Metro! along with works of other popular choreographers. From dance theatre, western classical to Indian classical, this festival presents a plethora of dance techniques.
Called Narendra Sharma Festival of Dance 2012, the festival which is in its third edition, will see performances by celebrated choreographers such as Bharat Sharma, Sumeet Nagdev, Santosh Nair, Tripura Kashyap, Sangeeta Sharma, Astad Dedoo, Tanushree Shankar, Sheela Raj and The Danceworx, among others. “Usually festivals only focus on the dance forms.
But this one is of the choreographers. They have the freedom to interpret and experiment according to their personal sensibilities,” says Bharat Sharma, the choreographer of Metro! Metro!
On the opening day of the festival, another composition by Sharma — Nusrat Song — will be staged. “The piece has been choreographed on a Sufi song. Since there is no particular dance form for this music, I have allowed the dancers to experiment and I have just moulded them into a polished piece,” says Sharma.
The dance festival is presented annually in memory of choreographer Narendra Sharma, founder and director of Bhoomika Creative Dance Center. “We have a bunch of young dancers who perform and the beauty of the festival is the originality and the uniqueness to it,” says Bharat. The four-day long festival has no particular theme and promotes new choreographies and concepts.
