The 3D paintings on display at this exhibition explore a genre India has hardly seen.

After 3D movies becoming the new age mantra, it’s time for some 3D art. 36-year-old artist Akash Choyal is the first Indian artist who is exploring contemporary art in three dimensional medium. “We have seen 3D works in India before but only in photography. 3D paintings are very different and quite unexplored, both in India and abroad,” says the artist. Choyal will be displaying six of his works in an upcoming exhibition in Delhi, Titled ‘3Ds, Different, Dimensions & Definitions.’

Choyal’s first work in 3D was a painting titled ‘My Arena’, which was a result of the artist’s spiritual experiences. In his current exhibition, the artist is displaying an extension of his first work. Titled ‘Aurara’, the work depicts human tendency to attain the unknown horizons. “The painting has a human figure with many arms and hands. It portrays the human desires to expand and explore whether it’s in terms of money or fame or even friends.”

Besides his 3D paintings, Choyal is also displaying four sculptures, one in bamboo and three in fiber glass. “I started with plaster sculptures in 1996 and now my interest lies in doing something that is different and out of the box. Hence, I use mediums that are diverse. This has led me to intensely explore the possibilities in computer for my 3D paintings.”

The exhibition opens on January 19 and is on till February 5 at Gallery Ensign, B– 17, Gitanjali Enclave.
