Now, you could own artefacts from the Bhabhas

City gallery to auction 400 items from the illustrious family’s Malabar Hill residence.

In April this year, the Pundole Art Gallery had held an auction of 20 paintings from the private collection of the late Jamshed Bhabha, successfully raising Rs 10.5 crore for National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA). Next week, the gallery will host another auction for the NCPA, this time offering as many as 400 lots, including furniture, textiles, jewellery, paintings and even lights from Bhabha’s estate.

The proceeds of the auction, this time too, will go to the NCPA. Says auction specialist Robin Dean, “It was in Mr Bhabha’s will to donate this property to the NCPA, and we are conducting the auction on the latter’s behalf. There’s an array of objects available — ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2 crore.”

The highest estimated lots are two paintings — one by Tyeb Mehta and the other by VS Gaitonde — that have been marked at Rs 2-3 crore.

The auction will take place on October 12 and 13 at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point. Most of the pieces are available for viewing prior to the auction.
