The Malaysian odissi dancer- choreographer, who is also a master of bharatnatyam and ballet, will perform an odissi recital, Vision of Forever at Tata Theatre-NCPA, Nariman Point today 7 pm onwards.
Ask him about this program and he says, “‘Vision of Forever’ is an odissi presentation based on the Deba Prasad parampara (tradition) and inspired by a totally Shaivite repertoire. It features an acolyte’s journey as he is discovers the divine vision of the Universal spirit through dance.”
The artistic director of Sutra Dance Theatre and a student of the late guru Deba Prasad Das, Ramli Ibrahim has trained dancers in Malaysia and has performed across the globe for more than three decades. His broad style especially his tandava (vigorous) signature compositions, together with the strong underlying Tantric message, will be amply demonstrated in this production. Seven Malaysian odissi dancers will perform this act.
“Dasamahavidya — the Transcendent Knowledge of the Goddess Absolute is the highlight of our performance. It is unapologetic in not diluting the exploration of this Hindu concept,” says the dancer, who will also be touring Vadodara and Indore with this act.
The proceeds from the shows will go to Vidya, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering underprivileged children, youth and women. He recalls, “The founder of Vidya, Rashmi Misra, is an old friend of mine. She is trained in odissi too and our lineage is the same Deba Prasad parampara. When I met her earlier this year at Kuala Lumpur and mentioned that I will be passing through Mumbai, the idea to perform for Vidya came about.
