Mumbai’s theatre scene is known to be progressive and experimental. From musicals to love ballads and folk theatre to mime — a theatre lover is almost spoilt for choice. Now, Going Solo International Theatre Festival is bringing yet another popular genre to the table — solo acts. The three-day festival will present monologues by Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill among others.
Says Rajatri Biswas, festival coordinator, “Among our performances, Pip Utton’s play Adolf has been the most successful solo show, running over 15 years. It has been performed in over 20 countries. Churchill has been performed in Edinburgh and At The Edge in South Africa.”
Adolf makes an effort to explore Hitler’s inner world — revealing to the contemporary viewers the absurdity of his political beliefs. At The Edge, which is being performed by Jailoshini Naidoo, throws light on issues like home, belonging, alienation and exclusion. Finally, Churchill (also performed by Pip Utton), will give audiences a peek into the life of one of the world’s most-loved leaders.
Biswas adds, “The festival will focus on the age old tradition of story-telling at its most powerful level. The audience can expect performances that they have never seen before, thus deriving a global experience.”
