Photographs form a crucial part of our lives. We’ve all moved on to digital cameras, but when it comes to our fondest memories, they’ve all been captured on film rolls. The joy of digging through old photo albums is greater than any slideshow on a computer.
This timeless nostalgia of capturing memories in the form of pictures is the theme of Kodak’s Golden Roll photography contest, which is celebrating 125 years of bringing film photography to India. Says Srinivasu Saraswatula, head of consumer business, consumer digital group, Kodak India, “Film photography has brought to life some of the world’s best moments. Even most of our pre-Independence photographs were clicked on a Kodak. This is a celebration of all the happiness we’ve been able to share - whether they are professionally taken or amatuer shots.”
As part of the contest, a nation-wide platform was offered to aspiring photographers to send in images clicked on film. 6,121 entries were received from 80 cities. Three winners of the contest will get to showcase their work in an exhibition starting today.
Eminent photographers Mukesh Parpiani, Gautam Rajadhyaksha and Sherwin Crasto were the judges for the contest. “We followed an independent approach to each picture, looking not only at the composition, but also at whether the picture speaks to us. Each of us picked ten entries,” says Parpiani. Entries short-listed by them yielded one winner, which was chosen by National Awardee KG Maheshwari.

{{/usCountry}}Parpiani claims that even in an era that is clearly inclined towards technology, film photography is slowly making a comeback. “We all miss it. Digital photography has its plus points, but the thrill of developing our own work and eagerly awaiting the results is missing. When I find time, I shoot film photos now for the sake of posterity,” he says.
The exhibition of winning photographs will be on display at Piramal Art Gallery, Nariman Point till February 22.
