Here’s a tongue-tease that spans the most popular languages in India — Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and English. The Festival of Four Languages, organised by Akshara Theatre, celebrates music, poetry, films, theatre and books. The cultural affair is the brain child of Anusuya Vaidya, a director at Akshara.
“This festival is a collaboration of the positive and negative manifestations of the different cultural backgrounds in the city trying to make it a complete experience. There is something in each language every day.” she says. “I had been planning it for quite some time now and finally came up with the concept,” she adds.
The four-day affair starts today, and brings together different artists and theatre groups. One of them is the Asmita Theatre group. Headed by Arvind Gaur, the group is known for its socially relevant plays. "We will be presenting songs that have shown struggle of the people fighting for their rights," says Gaur. Another production to look forward to is Chauraha, by city-based Shoelace Productions.
It consists of four plays — Confessions of a Poet, Kutte, Unit Test and Majh, their new production in Punjabi. “The fest is a good initiative that brings all the four languages together. This has never happened before. We are staging our new production in Punjabi called Majh, which means a buffalo,” says Deepak Dhamija, a director from the group. Other performances include Pierrot’s Troupe, Paltan, Entropy, Saksham Arts. There will be dramatised book readings, folk, classical, rock and rap. Also, Punjabi musician Rabbi Shergill will be conducting a talk on poetry.
