Director Pankuj Parashar will debut as an artist today. The man who used computer graphics for the first time in opening credits of the Naseeruddin Shah hit, Jalwa (1987), is exhibiting his computer-generated artworks at Out Of The Blue, Bandra, over the next five days.
“I started doing oil on canvass at the age of 12 and continued till I was about 20,” says Parashar. “I stopped after I got into the film institute. Later, when I got a computer, I started dabbling in graphic art at home.”
Parashar collaborated with animation ace, Ram Mohan for the Jalwa titles using computer printouts. He created computer-generated virtual sets for Rajkumar (1996) and featured on BBC’s Tomorrow’s World as the pioneer in 3D graphics in India.
Just imagine
The director admits he doesn’t follow a set pattern or theme in art. “I imagine something and create it on the comp,” he informs. A friend saw a couple of his artworks and wanted them for an exhibition for a charitable cause. “I couldn’t refuse,” he smiles saying that Ganesh Chaugale of Chaugale Shipping and Mining is backing the cause.
After the exhibition, Parashar wants to set up a 3D world museum that is as real as it is virtual. “With the new technology coming in, it’s not an impossible dream and shouldn’t take long,” he says.

{{/usCountry}}Meanwhile, he is working on his next movie, a comedy titled Cocktail being produced Sunil Manchanda. “We should start casting for it soon,” is all he’s willing to reveal.
