Three Indian artists — Alka Raghuvanshi, Manisha Gawade and Shridhar Iyer — are exhibiting their works in an ongoing exhibition in Dubai under the patronage of the Dubai Art and Culture Authority. What makes ‘Painting a Thread’ special is the bridge between the artists’ canvas and surfaces such as clothes and other materials, that have been used to introduce art accessories.
“The idea behind art accessories is to get the impressions of art in our daily life. We have on display pendants, saris, scarves and many other things that have been created the same way we do an art piece,” says Raghuvanshi. Her creations include two-inch canvases strung with semi-precious stones to create neck pieces. She has also painted silk saris and evening bags, the handles of which are strung with semi-precious stones in vibrant colours.
Gawade, the curator of the exhibition, uses thread-like formations as a metaphor to express the union between people of various races and cultures. “The paintings that I have on display are from my series ‘Threads of Life’, that talks about the union of people, their journeys and different cultures. I plan to take this further by getting this art onto furniture, which is a step forward in our attempt of getting art into everyday life,” she says. “We also plan to get this exhibition to India very soon with more addition to art accessories ”, adds Gawade.
The exhibition is a seamless interplay where one artist picks up from where the other left, and then passes on to the next level. Thus, Shridhar Iyer’s ‘Jatra’ completes this interactive exhibition. The artist unfurls his earlier explorations into terrains of the ancient and the unknown, with his exhibit of yin and yang.
