Chelani was detained with his relative Kapil and their driver when the police found the money in their SUV during a routine inspection. According to a senior I-T department official in Bhopal, the cash seized has been taken over by the department.

“Our personnel have quizzed the actor and his aides twice in Hoshangabad. Now he will be summoned to Bhopal for questioning to track the source of the unexplained cash,” said the official.

On December 8, when questioned by Hoshangabad Kotwali police, the actor had claimed that the cash was generated through sale of a house in Itarsi. The cash was being taken to a relative in Hoshangabad town, he had said.

The Hoshangabad Kotwali police, however, had said that Chelani’s SUV was en route to Bhopal and not Hoshangabad.

The income tax department started surveys at the premises of a prominent car dealer and a hardware merchant in Raipur on Tuesday following intelligence information about the possibility of black money having been parked by them.
