The man who was shot dead has been identified as Anand Bind, a wanted criminal from Mirzapur in UP accused in 10-15 cases of loot, attempt to murder and murder.

“Bind’s gang often sells gold and silver looted from East UP to select jewellers in Rewa. He, along with three aides, had murdered a jeweller and looted 34 kg silver in Ganeshganj area of Mirzapur in July. While 24kg silver was recovered by Mirzapur police with the arrest of his three aides a few days ago, Bind had managed to escape with the remaining 10 kg silver,” Mirzapur Katra Kotwali in charge Sunil Dutt Dubey said.

Three jewellers, who in the past had helped Bind sell looted booty in Rewa, hired a car from Mirzapur on Friday morning and picked up Bind from Meja area of Allahabad along with 10 kg of silver. The four left for Rewa to weigh and sell the looted silver.

Additional SP (Mauganj) in Rewa Shiv Kumar Singh confirmed recovery of around 2.5 to 3 kg silver from the taxi in which Bind and the three jewellers — Neeraj Soni, his relative Dipak Soni and Akash Sen — were travelling.

The remaining 5-7 kg silver is untraceable, police sources said.

Bind was shot dead by one of the jewellers inside the car near Panni village in Mauganj area on the Allahabad-Chakghat highway.

While Dipak and taxi driver Vinod Yadav were arrested, the government railway police (GRP) in Mirzapur on Saturday arrested the other two jewellers from Mirzapur railway station while they were trying to flee out of UP.

The jewellers often accompanied Bind to sell looted booty in Rewa. However, this time the quantity of silver was large, Mirzapur police sources said. They made Bind consume alcohol and then shot him dead with his own pistol, they said.

Criminal planned to kill politician

Bind was arrested in 2015 with his aide Amit Shukla in Mirzapur and booked under Gangster Act by UP police after it was found that he was planning to execute a contract killing of a Nashik (Maharashtra)-based politician for `one crore.

Bind and Shukla were released on bail a few months back. The Maharashtra police are searching for Shukla, sources in Mirzapur (UP) police said.
