Congress has expelled former member of parliament (MP) and senior leader Ghufran Azam from the party for his constant attacks on the party leadership.

A local strongman, Azam had been speaking openly against Congress for the last couple of months. In a press conference last week, he had raised questions on the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Azam had said Rahul and Sonia should have resigned after the party's dismal performance in the LS polls. As he was also an All India Congress Committee (AICC) member, the decision to expel him was taken in Delhi, and subsequently conveyed to the state unit.

State Congress chief spokesperson KK Mishra said Azam has been expelled from the Congress for his anti-party activities. "The party took a serious view of his constant attack against Congress leadership and hence the decision was taken," he said.

"This is a warning to other such leaders too, who act in such a manner and speak the language of BJP for their personal benefits," Mishra further said.

A couple of months back also; Azam had targeted the Congress leadership. He had said that even after many years, Rahul Gandhi couldn't learn to deliver speeches, and he (Rahul) has been an embarrassment for the party. Then also, he had attacked Sonia Gandhi.
