The Congress on Wednesday accused the Madhya Pradesh government of not allowing debate on issues of public interest, after it wrapped up the recent budget session in just six settings and failed to discuss the crop damage in the assembly.
Launching a direct offensive on the chief minister, state Congress chief Arun Yadav said: "Have you seen a government which does not allow debate on issues of utmost importance in the House? Be it the budget or the issues concerning the farmers in the wake of unseasonal rain and hailstorms, debate is not allowed in the House. The budget was passed without a debate and when we wanted a three-day session for an elaborate discussion on farmers’ woes, they agreed to a customary debate and nothing came out of it."
Yadav was replying to a question as to why party MLAs were resorting to protests instead of raising the issue in the House.
Backing up his charge with figures, Yadav said: "The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government convened a winter session for five days and now the budget session, that was slated from February 18 to March 27, was wound up on February 26 after a mere six sittings."
When asked why the leader of Opposition or other senior party MLAs, who are a part of the business advisory council of the House, did not resist the state government's alleged moves to scuttle the proceedings of the House, leader of Opposition Satyadev Katare said: "We do raise the issue. Sometimes, there have also been furious exchanges but we don't come to you with everything that transpires during functioning of the House."
