Following the recent rape of a minor girl in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) on Tuesday asked the state government to introduce a compensation scheme for rape survivors in MP.
The commission’s recommendation that the scheme should be implemented within six months comes after the seven-year-old girl from Balaghat was kidnapped and raped by a man when she was returning home from an anganwadi.
The commission said while schemes like Ladli Laxmi Yojana were introduced to empower girls, there was no scheme to compensate rape survivors.
The commission urged the government to introduce a scheme that can provide proper medical treatment and secure the future of the survivor.
It also asked the government to provide financial aid of Rs 1 lakh each to families of rape survivors immediately.
In a letter to the commission, the minor rape survivor’s father said while the accused was awarded life imprisonment, the incident had come as a shock to his daughter, who had lost her ‘mental stability’.
