Taking cognisance of a HT report, the MP Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to director general (jails), seeking reply on the suspicious death of an undertrial prisoner in Bhopal central jail on December 10 night.

The DG (jails) has been asked by the commission to file reply detailing the circumstances of the incident within four weeks. The undertrial Veeru Rathore (32), a resident of Genhukheda locality, had been arrested by local Kolar police about four months ago on charge of attempt to murder.

He was sent to Bhopal central jail after being produced in court. On December 10 evening, Rathore was admitted to Hamidia Hospital by jail administration, where he died about 11pm during treatment.

Rathore's family members suspected that he was brutally beaten up either by jail personnel or by prisoners and claimed that there are injury marks on his body.

His elder brother Mahendra claimed that Veeru has told him so while in hospital. The jail superintendent MR Patel had however refuted the allegation and said that he was admitted to hospital after loose motions deteriorated.
