In a case of alleged dowry death, the police recently recovered the body of a woman when her in-laws were taking it to conduct the last rites. Seeing the police, the in-laws fled. Three to four paper pins were also found stuck in the woman’s feet.

The deceased has been identified as Aarti Devi, 23, wife of Jitendra Singh, a resident of Chandupura village in Morena district.
According to the deceased’s father, Munna Singh Gurjar, a resident of Kathoda village in Bhind district, he came to know about the case only when someone from Chandupura village informed him. Gurjar alleged that ever since his daughter was married to Singh on May 21, 2013, the in-laws had been harassing her for dowry and it was because of this they might have murdered her.
Basaiya police station in-charge US Chauhan said that the deceased reportedly fell ill on October 22 and died later in the night. The next day on October 23, the in-laws, instead of informing the parents, planned to perform the last rites secretly. This, the police said, has created a mystery over the exact reason of the woman’s death.
Local villagers, as per traditional practice, believe that the pins were stuck in the feet so that the soul of the deceased may not torment the in-laws. Police have lodged a case and started investigation.
