In the wake of Chhattisgarh sterilisation tragedy, government doctors of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday decided that they would conduct such surgeries only in operation theaters, and not in health camps.
The Madhya Pradesh Medical Officers Association took the decision at a meeting that was attended by representatives from 35 districts of the state.
"We have decided not to conduct family planning operations in health camps. The decision has been taken to save people undergoing sterlisation surgeries from complications. We should not put their lives in danger," said Dr Ajay Khare, the president of Madhya Pradesh Medical Officers Association (MPMOA).
He said the association would submit a memorandum to senior officers working with the health department. He said the guidelines of central government also states that the doctors must not perform sterlisation operation in absence of operation theatre.
In Chhattisgarh, 11 women died and around 34 were reported critical after undergoing sterlisation surgeries during a family planning camp organised by health department of Chhattisgarh last month. There were among 83 women who had undergone laparoscopic sterilisation as part of an annual family planning camp.
After the incident, action was taken against the doctor who performed the surgeries. However, the investigation later revealed that the drug administered to the patients was poisonous because of which women died.

{{/usCountry}}"We have learnt lessons from the Chhattisgarh incident. In every such incident, a doctor is punished or has to face action. In this case also, the doctor was sent to jail despite the fact that the drug administered to women was poisonous," said Dr Khare.
