‘The Freedom Theatre’ from Palestine would visit Bhopal in December and stage plays focused on depicting the ways of cultural resistance in their country.

The theatre has been invited by Jan Natya Manch and the two groups would also prepare a joint production.

“There are a lot of similarities between the two groups. Head of The Freedom Theatre, Juliano Mer Khamis, was killed by masked murderers in Palestine. Similarly, the head of Jan Natya Manch, Safdar Hashmi, was also murdered. Both have worked against cultural resistance,” said Rahul Sharma, a member of the organising committee, on Thursday.

The group would come to Bhopal on December 20 and stay till December 21. At present, the group is in Delhi and is learning about street plays and preparing a new production with Jan Natya Manch. They would perform on December 20 at Ravindra Bhawan open auditorium.

On the next day, they would perform street plays at Safia College, Gas Victims Colony in JP Nagar and in MP Nagar, said Manoj Kulkarni, member of the organising group. They would also hold an exhibition and present their traditional dance performances.

Sharma said,“We want to sensitise Indian people about the Palestine issue. Cultural resistance exists in both nations. So, some common solutions could be worked out.”
