Lives and limbs of citizens continue to be at the maximum risk on the roads of state capital as rashly driven vehicles are frequently getting involved in fatal accidents. With no measures adopted to check speed limits of vehicle, drivers are increasingly flouting traffic norms.
Sunday morning accident wherein a recklessly driven car hit two bikes on Chetak Bridge again exposed the weakness of traffic system of the city. More than 10 persons have lost their lives and several sustained serious injuries in five to six major rash-driving accidents reported in the city in the past five months.
The traffic experts feel that there is lack of implementation of four Es (Education, Enforcement, Engineering and Emergency Traffic Service) in the city. Experts say that four Es are essential to strengthen traffic arrangement in any city of the world.
Traffic expert, Siddharth Rokade, who is posted as assistant professor at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) Bhopal, hold traffic police’s failure responsible for rash driving in the city.
"It shows lack of implementation of enforcement by the traffic cops. There are so many devices, which traffic cops can use to put a break on speeding vehicles. The 'speed radar gun' should be installed randomly in the city and those who are found driving rashly should be penalised," he told HT.

{{/usCountry}}He also suggests people of the city should be made aware of the traffic rules. "People of the city especially youths should be educated about the traffic rules. In foreign countries you see that citizens follow the traffic rules religiously because they get traffic education since their childhood," he says. Superintendent of police (SP) (Traffic) T Amongla Aier, however, said enforcement was very much there.
"We are trying our best to stop the rash driving in the city. But, it is citizens who have to understand about the importance of their lives. The traffic cops cannot be deployed at every point of roads. People should be educated about how to follow the traffic rules," she told the HT.
