The Indian Railways is set to become one of the world’s largest public Wi-Fi systems, Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu posted on Twitter on Tuesday, soon after flagging off train services on the new Jabalpur-Sukri broad gauge route.
Addressing the function in Jabalpur, Prabhu also urged the Madhya Pradesh government to come out with new proposals for the expansion of the railway network in the state. Currently, work on various railway projects worth Rs 82,000 crore is on in the state and the railways want it to further enhance it by Rs 45,000 crore, the minister said.
“Any investments of the railways in Madhya Pradesh benefits entire country due to its strategic geographical position where there is movement of trains from all four directions — North, South, East and West”, he said.
He also urged chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to come out with a model plan for railway investment in the state to further expand the network.
He said the railway is eying to have a joint venture companies with state governments to mobilise financial resources for taking up railway infrastructure projects as per requirement of the states. “The railways has planned to hold a meeting on November 3 in Delhi to carry out a massive electrification of routes. Ministers from the states are also invited to deliberate in the meeting,” he said.
