The MP government has launched LED tube lights and five star ceiling fans which are energy efficient and will be sold at subsidised rates, claimed Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam (MPUVN) on Thursday.
Under UJALA (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for all) scheme, launched in April, 2016, MPUVN will provide 20 watt tube lights and 50 watt fans to the people.
“A normal tube light is 40 watt and a regular fan consumes 100 watt. The LED tube light and fan will reduce the power consumption by 68% and 50% respectively. We launched this after seeing a good response and the record success of UJALA LED bulbs in the state,” said principal secretary renewable energy Manu Srivastava.
The tube lights and fans are priced at Rs 230 and Rs 1,150 each respectively which is half the market price.
With a three year replacement warranty, the products will be available for the public at post offices, Urja Bhawan, district offices of MPUVN, Akshay Urja shops, DISCOM counters and Haat bazaar.
On being questioned why the Madhya Pradesh government sold LED bulbs at Rs 85 which were sold for Rs 50 in other states, chairman of MPUVN Vijendra Singh Sisodia said, “We did not differentiate like other states who sold a six watt LED bulb for Rs 55 or so and a 9 watt at a higher price. We have distributed nine watt bulbs to all and a state tax was also levied, thus it came to Rs 85.”

The state achieved annual energy savings of 148 crore units and Rs 886 crore in consumer bills per annum after the distribution of LED bulbs, said chief engineer at MPUVN Bhuvanesh Patel.
