School education minister Archana Chitnis asked teachers to end the menace of casteism while governor Ram Naresh Yadav said that education, which cannot build students’ character, is meaningless; while speaking at a Teacher’s Day celebration function at the Ravindra Bhawan here on Wednesday. Tribal welfare minister Kunwar Vijay Shah also attended the function.
Chitnis’ speech remained the main topic of discussion during and after the programme. She also emphasised on the element of valour amongst teachers. The minister did not end here and gave examples that those who believe in division do not earn respect. “Even a tailor respects the needle by tucking it on his cap because the needle unites and places the scissors below because it is used for cutting. A fox may be termed clever but it feeds on the left overs of a lion, which is known for its valour,” cited Chitnis. Most of the audience took the remark in context of the present controversy related to reservation in promotion.
Addressing teachers and parents present in the programme the governor said the foremost objective of education is character building of the youth. Besides teaching, it is also the responsibility of the teachers to instil human values, character and virtues in students. He said that teachers dedicated and committed to the country and the society can change the course of history by imparting correct education.
Referring to former President of India late Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the governor said that Radhakrishnan firmly believed that even the most serious problems could be redressed through the democratic method of mutual dialogue.

{{/usCountry}}The governor felicitated six teachers of the state with state-level awards. Yadav also felicitated 13 teachers who won President’s Awards for the year 2011. He honoured Pawan Guru with an award of rupees one lakh along with a citation, shawl and coconut for his outstanding contribution to education. The award was instituted this year. He also gave awards worth Rs. 5000 each to Shankar Dayal Dixit of Satna and Madhubala Saxena of Guna, who have been selected among two teachers each from every district under the National Teaching Symposium.
Tribal welfare minister Shah said that teachers set precedents for others by contributing to the teaching process.
Girl students of Kamla Nehru Girls Higher Secondary School recited Saraswati Vandana, Guru Vandana, Vande Matram and Madhya Pradesh Gaan on the occasion. Principal secretary school education Sanjay Singh delivered the welcome address. Commissioner school education Arun Kochar presented books as mementos to the guests.
