The accused, who are residents of Tallaiya, had flashed an fabricated story on social messenger Whatsapp that some localities in the walled city had received red water from taps, which get water supply from the BMC.

The inherent message of the story was that it was blood of the goats sacrificed during Eid-ul-Zuha that had mixed with drinking water. A report to this effect was also telecast by some local news channels on Tuesday morning before the BMC administration swung into action and lodged an FIR in view of the fact that in the past few months the messages and events reported on social media networks had led to communal flare-up in various parts of the state.

Later a press communiqué the BMC said that commissioner Tejaswi Naik received information that residents of Tallaiya were receiving murky water.

BMC also warned anti-social elements not to spread such rumours on social media networks or elsewhere BMC would be take tough action against them.
