A 22 year old woman has bludgeoned to death a young man who had been harassing her for over a year. The incident occurred in Chhawal village in Betul district, 175 km south of Bhopal, on Sunday evening.
Renuka Deshmukh attacked Bhojraj Sahu, 26, with a stone and a stick. She has been arrested and booked for murder.
Sahu had continued to harass Deshmukh even after he got married, the police said. In March, she lodged a complaint against him and he was arrested. But he got bail and once out of jail, began harassing her again.
On Sunday afternoon, Sahu, in an inebriated condition, followed Deshmukh home from her college. According to Deshmukh, he wanted her to marry him, RL Prajapati, Betul superintendent of police, told HT. When she refused, he verbally abused and assaulted her.
“Exasperated, she kicked him in the groin and when he fell, hit him with a stone,” said Abid Ali Amir, sub-divisional officer of police, Multai. “He tried to escape, but she chased him and hit him repeatedly with a stick till he collapsed.” The man died on the spot.
Deshmukh is a second year BSc student. Sahu, a trader from nearby Jambada village, was her brother-in-law’s friend. Sahu’s family said Deshmukh was pestering Sahu, who had got married last year. “She had a relationship with my brother and was blackmailing him,” said Ajay, Sahu’s brother. “Her family was unhappy since my brother was a business rival.”
