Director Mahesh Bhatt who loved daughter Alia's performance in Highway, found her impressive in 2 States too. The filmmaker, however, felt Arjun Kapoor is the star in Abhishek Verman's film.

The film is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller of the same name.
Alia earlier said in an interview that when she read the book for the first time, she felt it could be made into a good film.
“I knew Arjun was on board… but I never thought I will be part of the film. I got a call for a look test and the point being that I should look good with Arjun. I was hoping it comes to me and it did. It’s a big achievement for me," the Highway star had said.
