“These days, item numbers form an integral part of the film. You cannot do away with these,” he says. So how did he get about to writing one? “The director (Pranav Singh) asked me to write an item number for a particular situation in the film, and I could not say no to it. It’s almost like the situation where a friend asks me to help him with a court case and therefore, I cannot say no to that request.”

The 66-year-old has written five songs for an upcoming film starring actors Jimmy Shergill and Sanjay Suri.

The song he penned in Bandook was, however, a romantic number titled Tu Jaldi Bata De.

“I tried writing a romantic number first (instead of an item song), but then it didn’t fit the situation and that’s why we had to go ahead with the item track (in the upcoming movie). But then there are different songs for different situations, and this is one of them,” he says.
