‘Audience sense Ranbir’s warmth, they want him to succeed’

In an interview with HT, director talks about why he has never been a fan of film’s opening figures, how some of Indian cinema’s biggest successes had weak openings and why Ranbir Kapoor is so special.

Imtiaz Ali’s latest film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone may be doing well at the box office, but the filmmaker says that he has never been a big fan of these numbers.

“I feel that there is too much emphasis on the initial draw or the opening of the film. I’d like to remind everyone that some of the biggest stories of Indian cinema may not have necessarily had the biggest openings,” he says, adding, “It’s like directors are not making movies for the audience any more, instead they are just making it for their own selfish short-term interests.”
