Bollywood couples with a twist

2013 will see a number of films featuring unusual star casts — in terms of the age gap and otherwise. Aatma, had one such unusual pairing of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bipasha Basu. We look at other few odd pairs from B-Town who will hit silver screens this year.

Unusual lead pairs always generate interest and curiosity among the audiences, mainly to find out how great the on-screen chemistry of a pair will be. Last week’s release, Aatma, had one such unusual pairing of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bipasha Basu. Along with Aatma’s lead pair, we look at other few odd pairs from B-Town who will hit silver screens this year.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui (39) and Bipasha Basu (34)

Film:
Aatma

What’s new: Ever since the cast list of Suparn Varma’s horror-psychological thriller became public, the pairing raised several eyebrows — and for a good

reason. While Nawaz is the new poster boy of ‘meaningful/parallel’ cinema (remember the Gangs Of Wasseypur series?; 2012), the sultry Bipasha has tended to stick to glamourous roles so far. So, it hardly comes as a surprise that their casting has created a lot of buzz.

What’s interesting: Both actors come from completely different film backgrounds, so their pairing seems exciting.

Unusual meter: 7/10

Sunny Deol (57) and Kangana Ranaut (26)

Film: I Love New Year

What’s new: When Sunny started off his Bollywood career with his mega hit, Betaab, way back in 1983, Kangana wasn’t even born. But now, as Dharmendra’s son teams up with the young actor, who is less than half his age, you just can’t miss the oddness between the film’s lead actors. And the fact that they star opposite each other in an out-and-out romantic venture only makes the pairing weird.

What’s interesting: It will be nice to see brawny Sunny match up to Kangana’s petite avatar.

Unusual meter: 8/10

Rajinikanth (62) and Deepika Padukone (27)

Film:
Kochadaiyaan

What’s new: To start with, consider the vast age difference between Rajini and Deepika. In addition to that, while Deepika has constantly been a part of some of the most glamourous films in Bollywood, the mega star has been extremely choosy with his handful of films which mostly carry some kind of social message. The Om Shanti Om (2007) girl bagged the 3D venture after their other project, Rana, got shelved due to Rajini’s ill health.

What’s interesting: Rajini has been directed by his daughter Soundarya in the film, which is supposedly India’s first film that has been shot in the 3D motion capture technology.

Unusual meter: 9/10
