In Bollywood, the best new way to stand out from the crowd seems to involve making an unusual career choice. On the one hand, names like Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan are teaming up for a rom-com, while on the other, several unusual actor-directors are set to work together.
The latest example is Shah Rukh Khan, who will work with the Parzania (2007) director Rahul Dholakia for a film on crime and law, set in Gujarat. We take a look at some of the most unusual duos to work together in the coming days.
Shah Rukh Khan-Rahul Dholakia
project: Yet-untitled
What’s unusual: Dholakia’s claim to fame has been offbeat films such as Parzania and Lamhaa (2010), while Shah Rukh has mostly been associated with mainstream, big-budget blockbusters.
The lowdown: This project is being produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. Dholakia met SRK several times before the superstar gave his nod for the film in which he plays the role of a gangster based in Gujarat. In all likelihood, Shah Rukh will start shooting for this film by mid-next year.
Saif Ali Khan-Sajid Khan
Project: Humshakals
What’s unusual: Till date, Saif probably hasn’t had a tryst with slapstick, in-your-face comedy that Sajid is best known for. In fact, the actor has only experimented with rom-coms, with films such as Hum Tum (2004) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003).
The lowdown: After doing a few action films like Race 2 and Agent Vinod (2012), besides the zombie-comedy, Go Goa Gone, Saif will be stepping into unfamiliar territory, since Sajid is famous for his laugh riots. Along with Ram Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh, he too will have a triple role in the film, which is rumoured to be a remake of Angoor (1982).

What’s unusual: While Akshay is famous for his action roles and, of late, even comedy, Punit is associated with youthful rom-coms like I Hate Luv Storys (2010) and the upcoming film, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein.
The lowdown: A few weeks before Akshay came on board for Gutka, he stated in jest that “Karan (Johar) doesn’t take me in his films”. A few weeks later, the news that the actor will work in a Karan Johar co-production, that too under Punit’s direction, came as a surprise.
Randeep Hooda-Imtiaz Ali
Project: Highway
What’s unusual: Randeep is largely known for his serious characters in a number of films, especially gangster sagas, while Imtiaz is known for his breezy, romantic capers.
The lowdown: Randeep’s casting might be unusual for many, but Imtiaz feels that he is a “pure actor”. According to Imtiaz, he noticed that “purity” and also found something
arrogant about it.
