Fame Gurukul winner Qazi Touqeer reveals why he’s been rejecting offers

He won reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005 and apart from the song Afghan Jalebi in 2015, Qazi Touqeer has been missing in action. He tells us why.

It’s been more than a decade since he won reality show Fame Gurukul (in 2005) but Qazi Touqeer has remained away from the limelight and has not been seen around in Bollywood, too.He released tracks such as Yeh Pal, Karu Kya among others in 2005, but they didn’t do well.

Winner of the reality show Fame Gurukul, Qazi Touqeer says that he has been working on some serious projects.

Now, the singer-turned-actor reveals that he has been working on a ‘serious’ project. “I am working on a project that is important to me, and because of that, I have been rejecting all the offers,” says Qazi without revealing a particular timeline as to when his project will roll out.

In 2015, the Kashmiri singer was also seen alongside actor Katrina Kaif in the song Afghan Jalebi in filmmaker Kabir Khan’s movie Phantom. And the song undoubtedly helped him get more fame. Talking about being a part of this song, Qazi says, “I had been rejecting offers before performing in that song as well. But when I got a call from director Kabir Khan, I thought I can act. This is a very long and interesting story. I can’t divulge further details.”

Of all composers and singers in Bollywood, Qazi admits that he is only in touch with Arjit Singh ( his co-contestant in Fame Gurukul), who is still his good friend. “He is a nice human being. We talk on the phone. I even listen to his songs whenever I go for a long drive,” he says.

Qazi won the show Fame Gurukul- along with another contestant Ruprekha Banerjee in year 2005.

Commenting on Arjit’s live performances, Qazi says that Arjit always dreamt of becoming a playback singer. “And now, he is a successful singer in Bollywood. I am proud of the fact that he is my friend.”

Qazi is quick to add that unlike Arijit, he never had intentions of becoming a playback singer. “[When I was on that reality show] I had some different plans. I was there as a performer, with an intention to learn and compete,” he says, adding that Bollywood still has good music directors and lyricists, who can take the industry to new heights.
