Delhi Unirversity (DU) seems to have become a rage with Bollywood filmmakers. In the past six months, three movies have already been shot on campuses across Delhi — including Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar. 2010’s hit Band Baaja Baraat was filmed at DU colleges — Hansraj and Ramjas. Colleges such as Jamia Milia Islamia and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University are also on the Bollywood radar. We take a look at recent films where Delhi colleges had a starring role!
For the first time ever, this April, Jamia turned host for the shoot of a Bollywood movie. The film — Sadda Adda is being directed by Muazzam Beg, an alumnus of AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC). The student fraternity was seen crowding near the shooting are to get a glimpse of the stars. A scene of a cultural event was shot in the campus, under tight security arrangements.The cast, that was seen on the campus was a mix of different cultures.

This Ranbir Kapoor starrer had Hindu College girls in a tizzy when the college was selected as the location for the movie shoot in January this year. “Since it was an inside shoot, the crew strength in the college premises was kept to a minimum. Only basic security was there,” says a source. A volleyball scene was also shot in the college ground. Few parts of the movie were shot in St Stephen’s College.“I got a adrenaline attack when I got the opportunity to not only see but even get a picture clicked with Ranbir. I instantly sent them to all my friends through my cell phone. It was a dream come true for me,” says Ayushi Gupta of Hindu College.

The movie was shot in December 2010, in Hansraj College, which is also the college from where director-actor Pravin Dabas graduated. “The students were very helpful. There was no problem in shooting and I wish I get the opportunity to shoot all my movies in this college,” he said. For the students, who were a witness to the shooting, it was a cool experience. “It was really cool to see the shoots happening in our college, plus we had the chance to see our favourite stars,” says Ekta Agarwal, a student of the college.

Band Baaja Baraat
It was in Delhi University where Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh met for the first time in the film Band Baaja Baraat, which was shot in Ramjas and Hansraj College in 2010.“The film starts off in Delhi University where these characters meet. It was fabulous to be actually getting into that zone because the way these characters speak the kind of places where they hang out — it all adds
up to the distinct flavour of Delhi. Also, I had never been to the campus before. The portions that we shot in the DU were fun,” says Ranveer.

Kirori Mal College was among the various locations in Delhi where the film Milenge Milenge was shot in May 2010.
“Since I have lived in Delhi for a long time, it was very easy for me to shoot here. I am familiar with the roads and the University area. We shot the movie in different campuses in the city,” says director Satish Kaushik. The shoot saw students gathering in large numbers to get a glimpse of actors Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor.

Boys Toh Boys Hain
Students of Ramjas College say they had a great time watching the shoot of Boys Toh Boys Hain. The film was shot in the university earlier this year. “It was great fun to see the shoots taking place in the college. The feel-good factor of studying in the college increases because people from other colleges come and ask about the shoots and similar things. Since Boys Toh Boys Hain is based on campus life, it was interesting to see the shoots so similar to our lives,” says Chinmay Bhatt, a BCom Pass student of the College who saw the shooting of Boys Toh Boys Hain.

Dil Dosti Etc
Most of the film was shot in the campus of the Hindu College in early 2007. “The North campus of Delhi University has a unique character of its own. I am glad we shot there,” says actor Imaad Shah. For Manish Tiwary, the director of the film, it was the most suitable location for the shoot. “I checked almost 20 colleges in the university but it was my own institution — Hindu College that welcomed me with open arms,” he says.

No One Killed Jessica
Among much controversies, the campus of IP University was chosen as the location for the shoot of this film in April 2010. “There were issues in shooting at Delhi University, so we chose to recreate those scenes at IP University,” says Rajkumar Gupta, director of the film and a graduate from Ramjas College. Says Sarthak Prakash, a former student from the university, “I saw the crew in college and there was a lot of buzz around it. It was a proud moment for us.”

It was the Hansraj College where many parts of this film were shot in March, 2009. “Most directors, who shot for their films in the college, are our own students and feel happy shooting here. They go down the memory lane and give our present students encouragement. It’s an honour when they come back to the college. Also it brings fame to the college,” says college principal V K Kwatra. For Sachin Sharma, president of the student’s union, it was a proud feeling to be a part of a college where this iconic film was shot. “When I entered the college, I was proud to know that I am going to study in a college where Bollywood movies are shot frequently. My seniors showed me the classes where Dev D was filmed. I am sure it must have been a proud moment for them as well as the college authorities,” he says.
