For Emraan Hashmi’s upcoming film Jannat 2, Director Kunal Deshmukh got designer Rick Roy on board to give the actor a look that is not just catchy, but also progresses with the character.
Emraan’s outfits in the film divulge the progression of his character, Sonu Dilli, a street-smart hustler, cheeky, loyal and charming, who has never done an honest day’s work in his life. Later on in the film, Sonu sells locally made guns for a living.
Talking about the look, Rick says, “Kunal wanted it to be very characteristic. He was clear that Emraan couldn’t look outrageous. He had to look stylish in the role of a gun dealer. It had to be cool but not like a ‘hero’ per se, wherein he stands out from the rest. He didn’t want a stylised look with fancy clothes but one which tells the journey of a carefree guy who turns into a gun dealer. So we worked out a look that suited Emraan and the character equally well.”
This is the first time that Rick has designed for a male actor. Praising Emraan, he says, “He was cool and said, ‘my job is to play the character and your job is to design clothes. As long as the clothes fit me and are what the director needs, I have no problem’.” Emraan loved Rick’s work and adds, “If you don’t trust the people hired to do the job, then why take them on? So when I put my faith in a producer, director or a designer I know they know their jobs and I
don’t interfere. I let them guide me through their creative process.”

The casual look
At the beginning of the film Emraan’s character Sonu is a happy go lucky man who wears lots of colours. He wears cool Ed-Hardy T-shirts, coloured jackets, corduroy pants and has a bandana tied around his hand. “We have tried to make the style individualistic, yet within the zone of a Delhi guy who dresses to impress while not going overboard,” says Rick.
The dark look
Later on, when Emraan’s role gets intense in the film, the look switches to leather jackets, darker colours and heavier stubble. Now leading a chequered life, he will be seen in checks and striped shirts in dark maroon, green and blue. The look is classier, neater, yet stylish. The clothes depict his maturity and his growth in life.
