Deepika Naval has her hands full

Plays an intriguing character in Memories in March, her directorial debut to release in May.

The girl-next-door in films like Chashme Buddoor and Angoor, Deepti Naval is all set to make her directorial debut with Do Paise Ki Dhoop Chaar Aane Ki Baarish, which will release in May. She is also looking forward to the release of Memories In March that releases this week.

Written by Rituparno Ghosh and directed by Sanjoy Nag, the movie tells the story of a grieving mother who discovers some unexpected truths about her dead son. “Unlike most films where a mother’s role is peripheral, this film has a pivotal mother figure. The character intrigued me and since I was playing my age, I could relate to it”, she says.

“Rituparno is excellent at his job and I was really excited about working with him. In fact, I felt very comfortable working with Sanjoy too.” When asked why she hasn’t been seen in any of ex-husband Prakash Jha’s movies, which boasts of strong female characters, Deepti says, “Well, ask Prakash. I would love to work with him.”

The actor, who was last seen in Firaaq in 2009, says that thanks to the hospitality of her friend Moon Moon Sen, shooting for Memories In March in Kolkata was a pleasant experience, “I stayed at Moon Moon’s house and was looked after very well by both her and Raima, who plays my son’s peer in the movie”, she says.

She is not averse to taking up a challenging role on TV if she is offered one, “I don’t mind acting on TV if I have to play a mature, contemporary character. But I can’t play a lehenga-clad lady in a saas-bahu serial,” she chuckles.
