It all started with Vimanika Comics’ book, The Sixth: Legend of Karna. A successful businessman is forced to go to India in search of the dark shadows that have haunted him since childhood. The epic quest unfolds when he finds himself as a warrior in the midst of the greatest war of all time (Mahabharata), and the twisted legend of his true identity is revealed. Now, he has to fight the demons of the dark world, again, in today’s real world. But the story doesn’t end here for Karna. The self-sacrificing hero’s story is all set to be adapted into a live-action film, complete with drama, action, emotions, FX and CG to ensure that the plot presented is suited to today’s times.
Directed by Chetan Desai, who earlier helmed Ramayan — The Epic, this storyline was chosen due to the originality and passion of Karna’s life. “I want the world to see and know the truth about Karna. He was a real hero, who had all the attributes and characteristics of a god but flaws like a human. Born to a royal family, he led the life of a lower caste. But more than that, he overcame all the abuses and challenges in his life. It’s something to be inspired by,” says Karan Vir Arora, editor-in-chief, Vimanika Comics. Arora approached Desai, who he felt was best suited to execute the visuals. Desai agreed to helm the project and the project was finalised.
Faithful to the book
The film’s plot will be similar to the book. “We want the story to come alive from the graphic novel but it will be a balance of the comic style in terms of colour and feel of live-action,” Sixty per cent of the film will be shot with a chroma screen and the film will retain the flavour of the comic book artwork. “We will also make sure that the characters will be faithful to the book, but little tweaks may take place if needed.” The film will have elements and events of all the 12-15 books from Vimanika’s Karna series and will be digitally shot with the latest technology, which has been used in recent Hollywood films like The Social Network and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean — On Stranger Tides.
