Recipient of this year’s Padma Shri, a thinking man’s sex symbol and considered one of the best actors in the country, noted film actor Tabu (Tabassum Hashmi) turns 41 today.
Born in 1970, she is credited with innumerable awards. She began her career in films as a child artist in Hum Naujawan (1985). Her sheer determination to contain herself as a fine actor actually reached the audience as the 'Ruk Ruk Ruk' girl in Vijaypath (1994).
She won the coveted National Film Award for Best Actress twice, for Maachis and Chandni Bar. She has also won three statuettes in the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance category for Virasat, Hu Tu Tu, and Astitva besides the Best Supporting Actress for Biwi No 1.
She caught Gulzar's eye and her meaningful role in Maachis (1996) as a girl-next-door turned terrorist, set against the backdrop of Punjab’s militancy coupled with Priyadarshan's Viraasat and Kamal Haasan's Chachi 420 made her an actress to reckon with.

She also starred in Cheeni Kum in which she played a 34 year-old woman who falls in love with a 64 year-old played by Amitabh Bachchan. Apart from doing Hindi films, Tabu has also worked in Malayalam and Telugu films and it is said that whatever she does she creates waves with her performance. Tabu is often said to be a director’s delight when it comes to portraying strong women character, someone who asserts her individuality in a male dominated society.
She is the recipient of this year’s Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award.
