To make sure that the music of his upcoming film Raanjhanaa captures the feel of the city of Varanasi, director Anand Rai presented a unique reference to composer AR Rahman.

While scouting for locations, he had recorded the Ganga aarti — an evening ritual conducted on the ghats — which he handed over to Rahman.

Rai says, “The movie is based in Varanasi and Delhi. Since Ganga aarti is synonymous with Varanasi, I felt that a song inspired from it would fit well in the film.” He adds, “During the recce, I tried to gather as much information as possible. After I shared the recording with Rahman sir, he went through it and came up with interesting compositions.” The film features actors Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor in the lead.

He adds, “Dhanush hasn’t been part of the songs we have recorded. But there are three more tracks yet to be finalised.”
