Atul Kulkarni may have won multiple National Awards for his previous films, but his stint in Chaalis Chauraasi is a special one. The reason being that it will be the first time that the actor will work with his teacher Naseeruddin Shah.
“Naseer bhai used to be my teacher at National School of Drama (NSD). He taught me the nuances of acting. So in Chaalis Chauraasi, a student is working with their teacher after 10 years. It feels amazing,” says Atul, who studied at the drama school between 1992-1995.
Through the years, Naseer has been a keen observer of Atul’s works. “He was very impressed with my work in the Marathi film, Natrang (2010). I always visited him at his farmhouse to discuss various films and theatre projects. And now that our association has culminated in this (Chaalis Chauraasi), it feels great. All these years, I always looked forward to work with him,” he says.
In the past, Atul has bagged National Awards for his work in Chandni Bar (2001) and Hey Ram (2000). And with in Hriday Shetty’s Chaalis Chauraasi, the actor is ready to try his hand at an out-and-out comedy. “I’ve also danced on some songs in Hriday’s film. It’s a far cry from my serious and intense image. But I really enjoyed it,” he says.
However, the Rang De Basanti actor confesses that shaking a leg was no easy task for him. “As an actor I like to be challenged all the time. And interestingly, the six nights I was supposed to be dancing, happen to be my best nights ever,” says Atul, who will also be seen playing Raoji in Roland Joffe’s Singularity. “We have so much to learn in terms of work culture from them (Hollywod). I learnt a lot from the first shot till the last one,” he says.
