Don’t expect filmmaker Shekhar Kapur to roll out back to back films like his desi counterparts in Bollywood. The internationally acclaimed Indian filmmaker will make a film only when genuine passion moves him.

“I haven’t connected with Indian audiences for a long time because I haven’t made a film in India since Bandit Queen,” he says, adding, “That’s because I am not a career filmmaker. I make films when I like making films and then I do other things.”

After Bandit Queen (1994), Kapur has directed only international films, namely Elizabeth (1998), The Four Feathers (2002), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), a segment in New York, I Love You (2009) and a short film titled Passage (2009).

Ask him if he regrets his limited filmography unlike others, and he says, “No, because the other things that I do are quite fascinating. I travel. I go to the mountains. I go sailing. I have started an internet company.”

Kapur’s next is 'Paani', which is in news since over three years, but he hasn’t felt ready to direct it yet.
