In what is his third film in as many years, Ranveer Singh has managed to show a different side to him as an actor. In Lootera, he plays an intense lover, making us wonder if he’s taking a leaf from his own life. After all, his love life is just as talked about as his career.

In a candid chat, he talks about his rumoured girlfriend Deepika Padukone, apparent rivalry with star kids and multiple releases this year.

A lot has been written about Deepika and you. Are you guys dating?

We are good friends, but not dating.

The girls you have been linked with say you are caring. Are you an intense romantic?

Yes. I don’t know any other way to love. Love is fundamentally intense or else it’s not love. I don’t understand the grey areas in relationships and concepts like ‘you are together but you have your space’ too. Either you are in love or you are not. I don’t get the modern concept of relationships.

Do you feel that star kids like Arjun Kapoor and Varun Dhawan have it easy in Bollywood?

With three releases lined up back-to-back, it looks like a busy year for you.

I’m in no mood to take a break. I’ll continue to shock people — in each film, you’ll see me in a different avatar. Ram Leela is a high-budget film, and I hope I’ll be convincing as a strapping lad from Gujarat. Gunday is a film I was born to do; it’s a masala film. Kill Dill has an amazing script.

Were you apprehensive about Lootera?

I’m glad I made this brave choice. I knew I had the range as an actor, that my capabilities weren’t restricted to high-energy parts.

Have you replaced Ranbir Kapoor in Zoya Akthar’s next?

I’ve more or less locked my next film. I’ve been asked by the producer to not speak about it till an official announcement is made.
