A surprised Boney Kapoor is reluctant to comment, but reveals, “I was going to announce it at least six months later. We start the conversion process only in May, after the work on Spider-Man 4 is complete. The film will be ready for re-release in 2014, before the sequel of Mr India is out.”

Amrish Puri as the legendary Mogambo

The news of Mr India’s conversion comes close on the heels of James Cameron’s Titanic (1997), which was re-released in 3D recently. The film about the maiden voyage of a doomed ship and its passengers hit theatres on April 10 and has grossed Rs 18 crore so far.

Ask Boney why he decided to re-do the film, and he says, “Mr India was ahead of its time. Some of the sequences aren’t easy to attempt even today. The invisible man, Hanuman punching the villain, Mr India whipping a hunter and the late Amrish Puri as the legendary Mogambo are some things that will look excellent in 3D. Then there are songs like

Hawa hawaai

…,

Kaante nahi kat te

… that are popular even today.”

But will Mr India also see the unprecedented success that the re-released Titanic saw?

Some youngsters already sound hooked. Gaurang Chariyo, 20, says he “would go with his entire gang of friends to see it” while 18-year-old Ojas Sharma says, “It would be so much fun to see Mogambo in 3D. Eagerly waiting for it! When will it come out?”

Mr India sequel to be ready by 2014

The sequel of Mr India will be produced in 3D with a budget of approximately Rs 150 crore. Three screenwriters are working on the script. International technicians will be used for special effects and AR Rahman has been roped in to compose the film’s music. While Boney’s son Arjun will be part of the sequel, the film will also bring back the hit pair of Anil Kapoor and Sridevi.

Salman Khan is slated to play the villain. Boney Kapoor and Sahara Motion Pictures will produce the film together.
