“Producer ko akal nahi hai kya? (Doesn’t the producer have common sense?) There is no dearth of talent in India, so why bring in a foreigner? Such actions are mentally sick,” says Ameya Khopkar, president, MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) Cine Worker Association.

Other groups advise caution, too. “Shakira’s character has to be shown in the right way. Otherwise, there will be a big problem. There should be no vulgarity,” says Vinod Bansal of Vishva Hindu Parishad. “She better be careful,” warns Shweta Parulkar of the Shiv Sena.

The singer, who’s delivered hits such as Hips Don’t Lie and Waka Waka, is best known for her sex-icon status across the globe.

“An Indian should have played the role, but if not, they should make sure nobody’s sentiments are hurt,” says Pradeep Majumdar of CR Park’s Kali Bari Mandir society.
