Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmaavat continues to reap benefits at the box office from the massive controversy surrounding it. Padmaavat featuring Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone has crossed the Rs 150 crore mark and is still going strong at the box office. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted the film’s business figures in its first week, and the tally has arrived at a whopping Rs 155 crore.
Padmaavat opened to packed theatres on January 24 and earned Rs 5 crore in paid previews. Since then, it has sustained the momentum. So far, it has collected Rs 155.50 crore in the domestic market. The film is doing exceedingly well in the overseas markets as well.
The film ran into controversy right from the beginning when Bhansali started shooting in Jaipur, last year. A fringe group, the Karni Sena, attacked the sets and even assaulted Bhansali.
The protests became more intensified after the film’s trailer released in October. After many hiccups, Padmaavat finally released during the long weekend of the Republic Day, and immediately caught the attention of movie lovers.
#Padmaavat is UNSTOPPABLE... Crosses ₹ 150 cr mark... Wed [limited previews] 5 cr, Thu 19 cr, Fri 32 cr, Sat 27 cr, Sun 31 cr, Mon 15 cr, Tue 14 cr, Wed 12.50 cr. Total: ₹ 155.50 cr. India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) February 1, 2018
In the film, however, Ranveer Singh stole the limelight as a tyrant invader. He played Alauddin Khilji in the film.
Padmaavat, made at a budget of Rs 180 crore, still needs to earn a lot of money to break even, but it seems on course to become a blockbuster.
