Polish up the screen

With a rich lineup of movies from Poland, an ongoing film festival in town shows us some of the best cinematic talent from Central Europe.

Did you know that cinema in Poland has a history dating back to 1899? Now that is as old as the invention of cinematography itself. In an initiative to promote Polish films in India beyond the language barrier, The Polish Institute has organised the Kinoteka Polish Film Festival. A festival that includes some of the best in Polish cinema, it is doing its best to showcase the sensitivity in filmmaking in Poland.

The event, that opened on November 18 and concludes on November 23 at the India Habitat Centre, is screening films with English subtitles on a first-come, first-serve basis without any entry fee.

Anna Tryc Bromley, director of The Polish Institute, says: “There is such amazing cinematic talent in Poland. I was dying to show it to cinema lovers in India. This country understands films really well. I am sure here in India, people would be able to appreciate the real genius of good, sensitive filmmaking that we have in Poland.” Delhi-based filmmaker Anu Radha, co-director of A Little Poland in India, which was shown on the opening night of the festival, tells us, “You know as an Indian, it was a privilege to be a part of the Polish Film Festival. There is so much similarity between India and Poland. Both countries have strong family values and give a lot of importance to inter-personal relationships.
